Heart of the Hood

By Anthony Maes

$3,000 Grant

Photo-based mural and storytelling project documenting life in the Globeville, Elyria, and Swansea (GES) neighborhoods.

Mural wall with photographs of people

This project was successfully completed and ultimately exceeded its original goals, both in the quality of the work produced and the depth of community engagement achieved. Through this effort, the artist captured the heart and spirit of the Globeville, Elyria, and Swansea neighborhoods—not simply through photography, but by building meaningful relationships with residents and their families.

As part of the project, community members were offered full professional photo sessions at no cost, increasing access to high-quality photography that is often financially out of reach. These sessions created lasting memories while honoring the stories, culture, and lived experiences of the community.

While the project was not able to secure the originally planned mural wall, which would have further enhanced its visibility and impact, the final outcomes reflect a strong commitment to creativity, connection, and giving back. The result is a body of work that not only documents the community, but actively invests in it—celebrating identity, strengthening relationships, and contributing to a sense of pride and belonging.
