$5,000 Grant
Providing 6,300 meals for 45 GES residents living with cancer, HIV/AIDS. Alzheimer's, kidney/heart/lung disease, and other severe illnesses during the program period.
Project Angel Heart
Given the intersection between food insecurity and adverse health outcomes, there is a continued need for nutritional support for severely ill Coloradans. To address this need, Project Angel Heart prepares and home-delivers meals to neighbors living with severe illnesses throughout Colorado. We respectfully request $10,000 in renewed funding from the GES Community Investment Fund to support meal provision within GES. If awarded, funds would support the provision of 6,300 meals for 45 GES residents living with cancer, HIV/AIDS, Alzheimer’s, kidney/heart/lung disease, and other severe illnesses from 06/01/25-05/31/26.
The meals we provide are medically tailored, meaning they are approved by a registered dietitian and use evidence-based guidelines to ensure positive health outcomes. In practice this means that we tailor our meals to meet the individual and medical dietary needs of our clients. For example, our Southwest Sweet Potato Bowl is comprised of vegetables, eggs, and a side of black beans. For clients experiencing nausea or “chemo mouth” (metallic taste) from cancer treatments, spices and strong ingredients (i.e. garlic and onion) are eliminated. To keep the potassium levels of the dish appropriate for clients living with kidney disease, the sweet potatoes and black beans are replaced with quinoa. For clients living with heart failure, salt is limited.
Our meals are home-delivered each week, thus removing barriers to accessing fresh, healthy food due to mobility or accessibility challenges. Meals are also provided free of charge to all clients and their dependents. As a result, meal recipients are better able to afford their basic needs due our meals. By addressing food access and improving the health of GES residents through medically tailored nutrition, we are helping to build healthy, thriving neighborhoods for generations to come.
